Legendary Chicago chef Charlie Trotter was found unresponsive at his home today and was later pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He was 54 years old.

Trotter was best known for his two Michelin-star eponymous restaurant, which he famously left in 2012 for graduate school. The likes of Grant Achatz of Alinea, Homaro Cantu of Moto, Giuseppe Tentori of Boka, and Graham Elliot of Graham Elliot all spent time in Trotter's kitchen.

As condolences pour in from the food world, Eater Montreal reflects on Charlie Trotter's last visit to the city in 2010, to honour Toqué!'s Normand Laprise at a benefit dinner.
