Le Mal Nécessaire, the new boîte from Dave Schmidt (Maïs, Café Sardine/Iwashi, Datcha, Kabinet) and co., is now open in Chinatown from Wednesday to Sunday, 4:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m.
The cocktail menu is the cornerstone of a good tiki bar, of course, and the official Facebook page for Le Mal Nécessaire went public with its own list of Polynesian-style libations yesterday. While there is a Mai Tai (yes, in a pineapple), the drinks feel like on trend updates from the traditional Trader Vic's canon.
The "Big Trouble in Little China", for example, features Tanqueray Rangpur, Aperol, matcha salt and chicha morada grenadine. The "French Concession" throws together gin, Aperol, "Asian" bitters, citrus and orgeat. The eponymous house cocktail is a mix of Bourbon, Fernet Branca, Islay Scotch whisky, pineapple, citrus and cinnamon syrup.
Above and beyond tiki drinks, Le Mal Nécessaire also offers beers, wines and a few bar snacks. Have a look.
