Four years after longtime owner Moreno de Marchi sold the business, Le Latini is calling it quits. The 35-year-old restaurant will serve its last veal scallopini and glass of Barolo in a matter of hours.
A farewell message was posted last week on Facebook:
We would like to sincerely thank you for your support; especially that of our loyal clients and friends. It is the end of a great journey filled with memories. Life goes on, and we will see each other again!
Owner Joao Mendes recently sold the property, evaluated at over $6.4 million, to developers. The future plan for the site has not been disclosed and Mendes may yet open another restaurant. A world-class Italian wine cellar, 35,000 bottles strong, will go into storage and may face the auction block.
Pedro Mendes, son of Joao, turned down the opportunity to have a photographer capture the last moments at his family's restaurant. In reference to this article, Mendes said over the phone on Wednesday: "You mean after what you wrote about us? Nah, you can go fuck yourself."
Le Latini bids Montreal arrivederci at 11:00 p.m. tonight.
