In "The power of consumer reviews", The Gazette profiles chef Sean Murray Smith and Les Deux Singes de Montarvie. The humble Saint-Viateur Ouest bistro is the top-ranked Montreal restaurant on TripAdvisor, a spot it has held for nine of the past 12 months.
"It's a nice pat on the back (and) been great for business," Smith tells contributor Mark Caldwell.
Ambiance has long been the restaurant's strong suit. Despite a lacklustre meal in 2006, Lesley Chesterman ended a two-star review of Les Deux Singes de Montarvie with this:
Maybe I do take this whole food thing too seriously. There's a lot more to an appealing restaurant than the right salsa for a scallop, the seasoning of a fish filet or the sauce on a chocolate cake. Or so, in the case of a nice little restaurant like this, I wished I believed.
