Salmigondis Nabs Three Fat Stars From Lesley Chesterman

The Little Italy newcomer gets a boost from The Gazette critic.

"Take notice" of Salmigondis, writes Lesley Chesterman in The Gazette. An "almost flawless meal" earns the restaurant three stars: "Main courses were just as brilliant, starting with the halibut. Served with an autumnal ratatouille enhanced with corn, the fish was poached in milk and paired with Swiss chard. That blend of silky fish flesh, vibrant vegetables and bitter greens was not only perfectly crafted, but well thought out. It’s a dish I’m already dreaming of tasting again." [Gazette]

Not so much a review but a report on Bar Pop!, the casual buvette inside Laloux, from Jean-Philippe Tastet. Chef and new father Jonathan Lapierre-Rehayem has himself a hit: "Le menu compte une douzaine de plats. Dans un élan de sacrifice et d’abnégation, j’en ai goûté 10 pour vous. Dix moments de pure délectation. Les portions sont petites, mais amplement suffisantes pour un appétit normal." [Le Devoir]

Ma'tine can do no wrong, it seems. A couple off-notes aside, the restaurant offers "une cuisine créative abordable et conviviale", writes Marie-Claude Lortie: "En revanche, je n'ai que de bons mots à dire au sujet de la poivronade servie sur une grosse brioche dodue, à la fois juste assez grillée pour craquer sous la dent et bien beurrée pour nous faire sourire. Le tout ponctué de mini-anchois frits surprenants, croustillants, et entiers..." [La Presse]
