The Plateau is not completely inhospitable to new bars and restaurants, apparently.

Is this the home of Montreal's next great wine bar?

More than seven months after the replacement for Bar Mont Royal was made public, wine bar Rouge Gorge is almost here. Star designer Zébulon Perron is responsible for the makeover, which will fuse a buvette sensibility with the showcase for live music.

Partners include Laurent Farre and Alain Rochard (Vignoble du Loup Blanc), late of paragon bistro Le Continental. Other principals include David Veilleux and the owners of the property at 1234 Mont-Royal Est, Christian Hébert and Guillaume Drapeau. Chef Julien Rochard, son of Alain, will oversee a menu that "revisits Mediterranean, Cuban and New Orleans cuisine with local, organic ingredients."

The ownership group assures that come February, Rouge Gorge will "offer a desirable and exclusive range of privately imported wines and simple, original dishes."
