A sad announcement on Facebook today from Monick Gilles of Scarpetta. The chef will work her last service at the Mile End wine bar and sfizi restaurant this weekend. Here, translated, is Gilles' statement.
Hello everyone, it is with emotion that I announce my departure from Scarpetta at the end of this week. It is never easy to leave a place in which you have invested so much time and energy, but the time has come for me to chart a different course in my career. I thank all our customers, many of whom I had the opportunity and pleasure to meet in the dining room, for taking the time to appreciate my interpretation of beautiful Sicily. Thank you to friends, relatives, supporters , suppliers, all so important to the success of a restaurant. I also thank, of course, the principals in Scarpetta, for giving me the opportunity to visit Sicily, still so misunderstood, and I wish them all the best. Special thanks to Anthony [owner Antonio Russo] for his enthusiasm in discovering the hidden gastronomy of Sicily and for giving me carte blanche. See you all soon!
