Thanjai Not Exactly a Michelin Star Restaurant but Still Pretty Good

La Presse with the review today.

Thanjai is "sympathique et réconfortante, chaleureuse", writes Marie-Claude Lortie in La Presse today. The South Indian restaurant in Snowdon prompts the critic to begin her write-up with a nod to Gymkhana in tony Mayfair, London, a Michelin star table that serves ethereal biriyani in pastry crust that is "almost an homage to Bocuse."

Alas, Thanjai is not "exactement un étoilé Michelin" but manages to thrill Lortie just the same. Start with the dosas, which the critic describes as "huge, almost Breton-like crêpes": "Pour une introduction, prenez la version Mumbai, avec quelques verdures et des chutneys relativement peu piquants qui permettent de bien apprécier la complexité des sauces au lait de coco ou à la tomate."

Uttapams ("a little bit like crumpets") and butter chicken are less successful but the kitchen scores a hit with a "plat de poulet mijoté au poivre noir ou ce 'poulet désossé', dans lequel on voit les bâtons de cannelle et les coques d'anise étoilé perdus dans la sauce, follement parfumée." On a return visit, standouts include typical snacks like bonda and bhajji, as well as a vegetable biryani. In conclusion, the dhal is a bit dull but "rien pour nous faire oublier le grand plaisir de découvertes savoureuses que permet cette adresse sans prétention et tout en travail bien fait. Et fort abordable."
