Mile End Pub Sparrow Does Sunday Roast Right

More and more Montreal restaurants are offering Sunday roast dinners, declares Marie-Claude Lortie. Well-known English-centric haunts like Dominion Square Tavern and Maison Publique do the tradition justice, writes the critic, but the bellwether might be Sparrow. The Mile End pub, open since 2009, started the set menu Sunday service (prime rib, vegetables, baked potato, Yorkshire pudding, gravy, raifort cream, with a vegetarian option) about a year ago, after a kitchen shuffle and revamp. The result, asserts Lortie, is worth a detour. "Comme si on allait manger chez ses parents, on n'a pas le choix du menu. Ou peu de choix. Il y a l'option viande et l'option végétarienne. Un seul dessert est à la carte. C'est tout. Même pas d'entrée sous forme de soupe ou de salade. Peu importe. Le repas est copieux. Réconfortant." Verdict from the La Presse critic: totally worth a return visit.
