Thierry Daraize Sees Room for Improvement at Chez Roger

After a decade in business, signs of complacency emerge.

The critic for Le Journal de Montréal pays a visit to a Rosemont standby today and departs deflated. The service is professional, the ambiance superb but Chez Roger falters where it matters most: the food. Thierry Daraize, loath to disparage as a rule, comes down hard on the Beaubien bistro but manages to keep it constructive. The critic admits that he loves Chez Roger's style and atmosphere; the kitchen, however, suffers from a lack of audacity, passion, and precision. Calamari disappoint, a bavette with pepper sauce "sonne années 80" and the fish and chips lack flavour and originality.

Daraize's final verdict, three stars on five, feels almost charitable: "Bref, c’était peut-être une mauvaise soirée, ça arrive, même aux meilleurs, c’est la différence entre les robots et les êtres humains... Mais moi, je préfère les humains, même s’ils ne sont pas sous leurs meilleurs jours!"
