A liquor permit renewal imbroglio has forced one of Montreal's best cocktail bars to take an unexpected hiatus. Here's the word from Chinatown's Le Mal Nécessaire:
Liquor permits given by the [Régie des alcools, des courses et des jeux] RACJ need to be renewed annually for a nominal fee. Procedure dictates that a letter is sent to the business office and an effort is made to contact the establishment by phone and/or email when it is time to renew. We did not receive any warning via telephone or letter; only a letter on June 11th saying our permit has been temporarily revoked due to non-payment.
For this reason we are forced to close[. U]ntil the RACJ has processed our reapplication we are not permitted to serve alcohol. We have been informed this could last a week.
But..... Don’t worry!!!
We are going to use this short period to revamp the bar a bit. Please follow us on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter (@lemalnecessaire) for updates on our exact day of re-opening.
During this time, please visit our other establishments Datcha + Kabinet (98 + 92 Laurier) or Maison Sociale ( 5386 Boul St-Laurent).... or for something closer in this quartier there is our friends at Midway (1219 Boul St-Laurent) or Orange Rouge (106 Rue de la Gauchetière).
