Monick Gilles surprised many several months ago when she took to Facebook to announce that her run at Scarpetta was up. The chef worked her last shift at the Mile End wine bar and Sicilian sfizi spot in February and hinted that it was time to plot a new path. That career pivot has taken Gilles to Ahuntsic, and specifically to the kitchen at L'Alexia, the Mediterranean restaurant from Éric Jolander (Les Incorruptibles, ÜBER Cafbar) that opened on Fleury less than two years ago.
"I started on my new menu this week," reported Gilles today. "The emphasis will be on Mediterranean flavours, spices, ingredients, and the use of local/sustainable products as much as possible (for fish and meats). Items reflecting as much of the different countries of the Mediterranean region as possible, grilled meat and fish are 'du jour,' enabling me to play with the array of flavors more often based on availability/season. Keeping it fresh, colourful, and fun for both me and the customer!"
