"Take a best-selling cookbook author, and her son with a vision of sharing gourmet food with people around the world, and you have Red Bird Café." This, the narrative of a relatively new health-conscious Plateau-Mont-Royal coffee shop, and breakfast and lunch restaurant. Ostensibly well-placed on Saint-Laurent, corner Rachel, to offer area diners the likes of chicken kale Caesar salads, quinoa and turkey meatballs, and hummus beet sandwiches, Red Bird Café has sadly filed for bankruptcy. The business from Jonathan Goldman and cookbook author and matzo buttercrunch innovator Marcy Goldman declared over $145,000 in liabilities in its August 25 filing.
Red Bird Café opened in June. Jonathan Goldman, who has yet to respond to a request for comment, discussed the venture this past April: "The idea for Red Bird was born out of my desire to share the culinary wealth so to speak. Having tasted things like pizza croissants and Mandarin Chocolate Chip Biscotti, I wanted to give everyone the opportunity to experience the ambrosial flavors and genuine hospitality that was my birthright." Red Bird's creditors are slated to meet for the first time on September 14.
