Months after Scarpetta closed, somewhat suddenly, a new restaurant has come to replace it. Bistro Michelangelo, from partners Howard Gutman and Tony Rea, looks about set to open at 4525 du Parc. The space has been made over with a new floor plan, new furniture, and wall-mounted flat screens. "New tv's are in!!!! Can't wait for Eurocup and summer Olympics on the terrace!," management recently announced.
Thanks largely to chef Monick Gilles, Scarpetta earned decent reviews from Montreal's food critics after it opened in late 2012. Le Devoir's Jean-Philippe Tastet wrote in 2014 that the Mile End restaurant was a hidden gem. Too hidden, perhaps, despite a similar rave from Lesley Chesterman in the Montreal Gazette a year before. Months after Gilles left to take over the kitchen at L'Alexia in Ahuntsic, owner Antonio Russo closed Scarpetta for good. Stay tuned for developments on Bistro Michelangelo's bid to fill the void.
