Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre first floated the idea of a 6 a.m. last call at select bars two years ago. Now it's all about to come to pass, albeit for one night only, at a handful of watering holes.
Nine Quartier Latin bars will enjoy extended hours on February 28 for the Montréal en Lumière festival's ever-popular Nuit Blanche. The bars Pub Quartier Latin, Bistro à Jojo, Saint-Rock Brasserie Artisanale, Saint-Houblon, En Cachette, Cinko, Café Hookah Lounge, Patrick’s Pub Irlandais, and L’Île Noire obtained the exemption from the Régie des alcools, des courses, et des jeux based on a clause that permits later closing times during special events.
"This decision pleases us," stated Philip O'Dwyer, Director General of the SDC Quartier Latin, in a press release today. "Already last year the Quartier Latin and the Quartier des Spectacles, as well as the Village and downtown Montreal, were granted the status of a special tourist zone, thus entitling merchants to extend their opening hours. This good news confirms the innovative status of the Quartier Latin as a hub of culture and nightlife in Montreal."
A beefed-up police presence is all but guaranteed for the all-nighter. Some of these breakfast restaurants might want to beef up their staffs too.
