Laval now has its first microbrewery, with Les Insulaires recently arrived on de la Concorde near Notre-Dame-de-Fatima.
It’s a big one (the perks of choosing a more suburban locale): Nightlife reports that it has space for about 150 people inside, with a terrasse that’ll add another 50 spots in the summer.
It comes from the founder of the Festival des Bières de Laval, Marilène Barale, and her husband Guillaume Ouimet, who has home-brewed beer for several years.
The duo have 24 beer lines on hand, split between the house brews and guest beers from notable names like Dunham, Dieu du Ciel, and Vagabond. Also on hand are private import wines and mostly classic cocktails, with respectable gin, scotch, and whisky options.
On the beer side, Les Insulaires’ own creations are starting out rustic and winter-friendly, with a porter, New England IPA, and rye among the first five beers it’s put on tap.
Food is also on offer — expect pub-leaning grub like burgers, hanger steak, and Cornish hen, and smaller options like gravlax, and charcuterie or cheese plates.
But inside, don’t expect gritty pub vibes — it’s a bright interior with plants, cozy couches, and flowery wallpaper. There’s also space for music or comedy shows. It fits with the goals here: Les Insulaires’ owners previously told beer website Bières et Plaisirs that they’re aiming to be a family-friendly spot.
It’s been a solid year for microbreweries around Montreal — newcomers Beauregard, 4 Origines, La Dispensaire de Bière, and the Kahnawake Brewing Co. all arrived, as did St-Tite import À La Fut, with Les Insulaires now rounding out the crop.
