St-Henri’s petite sushi scene has grown a little larger, with newcomer Le Kioko now open on the Notre-Dame strip, right next to Satay Brothers.
Well, it’s not strictly sushi — Kioko is leaning in to all manner of raw seafood edibles, with various poke bowls and tartares available too.
On the sushi side, options are pretty broad — multiple tuna sashimi options are on the menu, as well as seal, octopus and scallop. In a step beyond your average neighbourhood sushi counter, there’s also grilled ray nigiri on the menu.
Then for poke bowls, Kioko pulls the Hawaiian fish and rice dish back towards its Japanese origins with toppings like edamame and shiitakes — it also branches outside its raw focus with shrimp tempura and karaage (fried) chicken bowl options too.
As for tartares, Kioko is taking some liberties — it seems the tartares, feature multiple “pieces” per serve, and are seasoned with spicy mayo and tobiko, among other things — a little like deconstructed maki rolls, without the rice and nori.
STATUS — Le Kioko is open at 3735 Notre-Dame W from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Wednesday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and 2 to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
