Consumer review site Yelp has done some number crunching and figured out the top-rated Canadian restaurants on its site, featuring ten Montreal establishments.
This is the third year that Yelp has dropped this kind of country-wide top 100 list (see 2017 here, and 2016 over here). Sure, some restaurant owners and chefs don’t love these kinds of online review services (they’ve even led to some aggressive and bizarre outbursts) because of the pettiness they can enable amongst customers.
And it’s understandable in some cases, when diners with minimal expertise penalize restaurants on platforms like Yelp and TripAdvisor for things like “the chefs weren’t wearing gloves, just like the Subway Sandwich Artists do”. But on the flip side, racking up positive reviews takes a certain skill, and most of the Montreal restaurants that cracked the top 100 are rather reputable and probably deserving of credit, even if everybody knows that a crepe joint in Markham, Ontario named “Muncheez” is probably not Canada’s second-best restaurant.
In putting together the list, Yelp considered both the number of reviews for a restaurant and the ratings of each review, and in an attempt to keep the tourist vote out, reviews from non-Canadians were not counted.
So without any further ado, here are the places that made the top 100, along with one of their best and the (sometimes incoherent) worst reviews each, just to prove that there truly is no pleasing everybody. See the full list over here.
