Montreal’s most nautical option for drinking in the summer has returned for 2018, as St-Henri/Little Burgundy’s Canal Lounge is back in action.
Head down to the Atwater Market, and the bar can be found floating in the Lachine Canal on the waterfront just a few steps away. Unlike the so-called party boats that occasionally depart from the Old Port (particularly around university frosh season), Canal Lounge is a fairly, uh, civilized locale for imbibing: sink into seats and banquettes inside the boat — and since it’s only open until 11 p.m. most nights, it doesn’t come across as a rowdy atmosphere.
Perhaps most surprisingly, while Canal Lounge is something of a novelty bar, the prices are fairly reasonable: tap beers run $6, and sangria-adjacent tinto de verano is $5 a glass while a range of mostly classic cocktails come in under $10. The menu isn’t elaborate — it reads as less a craft beer bar or fancy cocktail nook, and more just a neighbourhood watering hole on the water.
The Canal Lounge season runs through October.
STATUS — Canal Lounge is open at the Atwater quay (on the water adjacent to the Atwater Market) from 3 to 11 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday, and to 10 p.m. Sunday.
