Pointe-St-Charles Gets a Homey Coffee and Gelato Spot This Spring

Opening in March

Pointe-St-Charles is set to get its first gelato go-to, with coffee shop and gelateria Mollo currently preparing to open on Wellington Street.

Owner Alexandre Ouellette, who will run the café in conjunction with his wife, tells Eater that he’s hoping for the spot on Wellington near Ash to be a model neighbourhood coffee and ice cream spot.

“It’s a nice community over there, lots of families, lots of kids, there’s a lack of services and our goal was to open something that is going to unite all the community, a nice spot for kids to enjoy.”

Mollo will open up early for coffee and will serve small bites like banana bread, pastries, and grilled cheese, as well as featuring a small épicerie section for local goods.

But perhaps the most novel aspect will be Mollo’s house-made gelato — in a neighbourhood light on crèmeries, Ouellette will be making a variety of flavours from scratch. Having picked up gelato-making skills recently, he notes that “the flavours are infinite”.

He says he’s ready to get playful with the options — from classic dark chocolate to dulce de leche on the dairy side or a kids’ option named “dinosaur crunch”, through to vegan sorbets like pear, mango, and banana. Some options will rotate — and in a rarity for frozen treats in Montreal, Mollo will be open year-round (of course, the café element helps that).

It should be here just in time for spring — March 22 is set as its opening date.
