NDG’s Monkland Village has a brand new vegan restaurant, open as of today (June 13).
Hello 123 is quite the multi-purpose new restaurant — with brunch, lunch, dinner, coffee, cocktails, and other drinks, it’s the kind of place you can dress up or dress down, co-owner Mark Kupfert previously told Eater. It takes over the location that was formerly neighbourhood dining spot Prohibition.
While Hello 123 is new to Montreal, it’s not the first of its kind — one iteration of the restaurant has been open on Toronto’s Queen Street West for a couple of years now. Yet, Kupfert and his team are originally from Montreal, meaning Hello 123 isn’t . It’s the second restaurant Kupfert has brought over from Toronto — the other, Kupfert & Kim, has been serving fast-casual, lunchy bowls and more in Old Montreal since last fall.
Hello 123 is more of a sit-down affair — the Monkland version will be similar to the Toronto original, although not identical. Expect casual dishes that oscillate between comforting and light options, such as a loaded sweet potato, spicy bibimbap, or “pulled pineapple” sliders — it’s the kind of vegan restaurant that’s not excessively granola — while ingredients like tofu and tempeh are present, they’re definitely not the basis of every dish.
Brunch will bring vegan versions of classics, like eggs Benedict or an almond butter-based French toast, plus, that meat- and dairy-free icon, avocado toast. The bar program is also noteworthy — the cocktail list features juicy new creations and some twists on classics like sours and Manhattans; wines from Montreal importer Oenopole will be served, as will microbrewed beers and cider and kombucha options.
STATUS — Hello 123 is open daily for lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch at 5700 Monkland.
