Mile End is now home to an all-vegan diner, with Mimi & Jones recently taking up residence on Parc Avenue, between Fairmount and Laurier.
According to Tastet, it comes from the owner of Hochelaga (non-vegan) sushi spot Sata, MJ Guertin — it takes over the narrow yet cozy digs that were formerly pasta restaurant Carboni.
Drawing on classic Americana and inspired by Guertin’s time spent living in Los Angeles, Mimi & Jones is adorned with retro fittings, with a long bar running the length of the restaurant, complete with fixed stools and patterned tiling (there’s a terrasse out front, too). On the food side, there’s certainly some greasy spoon staples, too (although without the meat, of course) — a burger (with a house-made patty) and fries, and tofu-based nuggets with dipping sauces are on the menu, as are classic milkshakes and a caesar salad. It also swings into some slightly more upscale territory with ravioli, stuffed with faux ricotta, and served with basil pesto or rosé sauces.
The diner is licensed, and feature a short selection of cocktails, beers, and wines, too.
It’s been quite the year for vegan and vegetarian dining in the city, with new meat-free establishments popping up in multiple neighbourhoods — many of which are defining themselves in more particular terms than some of the city’s longer-standing vegan haunts, focusing on particular cuisines, cooking styles, or dishes. The Village has comforting resto Tendresse, vegan ramen joint Umami just opened in Little Italy, the Plateau has a new vegan pub, and a couple of blocks away in Mile End is Italian vegan restaurant Radis. Plus, Old Montreal is slated to get its own vegan sushi spot, Bloom, this fall.
STATUS — Mimi & Jones is open at 5149 Parc from noon to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 1 to 9 p.m. Saturday, 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday, and noon to 8 p.m. Monday. Closed Tuesday and Wednesday.
