The long-awaited side project from the owners of Juni is finally here.
Ôkini, a multi-faceted shop selling fish, take out dishes, Franco-Japanese pastries, and more, opens today in the space immediately next door to the acclaimed sushi restaurant — named 24 on Canada’s 100 Best Restaurants list this year — on Laurier Avenue.
The owners’ aim is to make the products they serve in a sit-down capacity available to the masses through Ôkini. They’ll be selling fresh fish from the same suppliers with whom they’ve cultivated decades-long relationships; selling bottled sauces made with the recipes Juni head chef Junichi Ikematsu uses at the restaurant; and serving grab-n-go products from 11 a.m. onward each day.
Beginning in March, the shop will also serve a tasting menu in its small seating space every Saturday. Groups of up to eight can reserve a spot to dine weekly from March 14 onward.
The owners also plan to hold cooking workshops, Omakase nights, and 5 à 7’s with deals on sake and more in the space.
STATUS: Ôkini is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 156B Laurier Avenue West.
