10 Very Good Veggie Burgers in Montreal

Have yourself a patty party — and hold the meat

View as Map

While the first-wave vegetarian food of yesteryear had a reputation of being all hemp seeds, health-conscious and bland, these days, a great vegetarian meal can be just as umami-packed as its carnivorous counterpart. The most popular entry point for vegetarian-curious eaters? Veggie burgers. Vegetarians, vegans, and meat-eaters converge when it comes to a great burger — and for good reason.

Perhaps pushed along by Beyond Meat and the Impossible Burger, plant-based patties are having a major resurgence, and the new-and-improved versions are arguably just as flavourful as the beef-based original. Here are some of the best that Montreal has to offer.

Looking for vegan or vegetarian food that isn’t necessarily a burger? We’ve got a map for that.

Vegetarians and vegans know Gusta as Montreal’s premium plant-based sausage brand, but its take out counter at the Jean-Talon Market goes far beyond that. The veggie burger, made with the same precision and love as the sausages, is only available here, and is well worth a stop.

(Note: the NDG location of Vegan Rapide has closed.)

If natural wine and burger towers sound appealing, head to Unibar in Old Montreal. This collaboration between Tommy Cafe and Uniburger feels more like a speakeasy than a fast food joint but the burgers (including the veggie burger, made with Beyond Meat patties), which have been compared to In-N-Out Burger, speak for themselves.

Le Kitchen has quietly been producing one of the tastiest burgers in the city for years.
