Also closed: a charming Little Italy taco-and-guédille spot

QUARTIER DES SPECTACLES — The Ferreira restaurant group (Café Ferreira, Café Vasco de Gama) is set to close down its Place-des-Arts restaurant Taverne F early in the New Year. The group announced the impending shutter on social media, with father-daughter pair Carlos and Sandra Ferreira noting that they opted not to renew their lease on the space for the casual Portuguese eatery. Taverne F occupies a particularly prime spot in Place-des-Arts — it sits on Jeanne-Mance Street alongside the Contemporary Art Museum, with large windows facing out to Place des Festivals. One other restaurant, Brasserie T (owned by the Toqué group) is located in a similar space, right alongside Taverne F. Its final day of service will be January 15, 2020 — given that the space is specifically designed for a restaurant, it the Quartier des Spectacles administration will lease it out to a new (and possibly notable) tenant. In a statement to Eater, a representative noted that they are open to a wide range of restaurants (but not franchises or chains), and that interested restaurateurs are invited to contact them for more information.

LITTLE ITALY — Not one, but two modern north-side taco restaurants are departing Montreal’s food scene — after Mile End’s Maïs announced its closure last week, now Fortune has checked out. Known for the interesting combo of tacos and guédilles (lobster rolls), it’s occupied its St-Laurent space by the corner of Beaubien for five years, and plated its last tortillas on December 14. It seems that its owners are planning something new for the space — the restaurant’s closure announcement linked to a page where customers can sign up to a mailing list to find out what’s coming “après Fortune”.

PLATEAU — Well, that didn’t last long: After comfortably less than a year, NDG pizzeria Melrose has closed down its Plateau location, which opened in the former Laika space on St-Laurent in March this year. The original, on Sherbrooke West, is very much still open.

LITTLE ITALY — The future of reputable gastronomic spot Salmigondis seems to be up in the air. The restaurant closed in late September with a promise to reopen after a short break for renovations, according to a message on the restaurant’s voicemail at the time. However, that message, which suggested that the closure would last just a few weeks, has disappeared from the restaurant’s phone line. That said, its phone line is still connected, and its website and social media pages are still online, suggesting that it may still be a temporary closure; we’ve reached out for an update but have not yet heard back.

But unlike other closures in the neighbourhood, there’s a happy ending, with the owners promising a new project

Mile End taqueria Maïs will close its doors by the end of the year.

The restaurant made the announcement on social media this week — but mercifully, its space on St-Laurent won’t become yet another empty, for-rent storefront in the neighbourhood. Some of the restaurant’s owners are retaining the space, and planning something new.

Maïs’ final day of service will be December 28 (and in the lead-up to that date, tequila and mezcal will be discounted). It opened in 2012 and served a respectable seven years on the Main, serving a mix of classics like carnitas and Baja-style fish tacos alongside creative other tacos such as a carrot-almond option.

The restaurant also made a name of-sorts for itself with pop-up restaurant Parasol, which opened for a few months each year in a space at the back of the restaurant. Starting in 2016, Parasol opened each summer in a garage-like space opening out to Maïs’ back alleyway. It focused more on vegetable and seafood dishes, as well as natural wine, and drew solid write-ups, courtesy of the work of chef William Cody and sommelier William Saulnier.

That’s where the future plans for Maïs’ space come in: Cody, Saulnier, and associates Peter and Susan Popovic will open a new restaurant based off the fresh style that Parasol put forward.

To be clear, Parasol is not being upgraded to a full-scale, permanent restaurant — it’s serving as the inspiration for the new entity, which is yet to be named. Cody tells Eater that Parasol will return as a pop-up in the warmer months, with its breezy back alley space.

Expect the new project to open sometime around March next year.

It’s not the only shutter at that east-end address — breakfast spot Ôzeu also shut its doors, and both indicated on social media that the closures were due to circumstances outside their control. Online commenters suggested that the building had been sold, and its new owner wanted to do change the spaces somehow, although city records do not yet indicate a change of ownership. An Instagram post suggested that Kobe’s owners are potentially interested in reopening, although it would be after a “long break”.

CÔTE-DES-NEIGES — Purveyor of very Americanized Chinese food P.F. Chang’s no longer exists in Montreal proper, as its location on Décarie Boulevard shut down this fall. (However, there is still a location in Carrefour Laval, for those in urgent need of chain restaurant kung pao chicken or orange peel beef). The chain arrived in Montreal back in 2012, but facing financial difficulties, the company that owned the rights to operate the chain in Canada sold it on to Groupe Sportscene, which owns sports bar chain La Cage.

MILE END — Somewhat expensive gym Machina has gone bankrupt — that means its cafeteria concept, Machina Smart Bar, is also now defunct. The shutter was very sudden — its space on de Gaspé hasn’t been touched since the closure a few weeks back, with shelves of protein powder and other supplements still fully stocked.

ST-HENRI — Réunionese restaurant Marmite Su’l Feu appears to have closed its permanent location on St-Jacques Street, however, all signs suggest that the curry and sandwich specialist will retain its seasonal stand at the Atwater Market (although it’s closed for the winter at the moment).

Chef Antonio Park | Supplied

It’s serving some Thai staples, but also brunch

Chef Antonio Park has closed one of his Westmount restaurants, and quietly opened another in its place in recent weeks.

Gone is Lavanderia, Park’s parrilla restaurant, centred around that Argentine style of grilling. It opened in 2015, but was knocked out of business for over a year following a major fire in late 2016. It had been reopened for little more than a year and a half until its closure at some point this summer.

Taking its place is a new Park project, Thai restaurant Kwai. Open for lunch, dinner, and brunch, it’s quite the multi-purpose affair, and price-wise, it’s approachable, with mains staying mostly between $20 and $30.

It’s new territory for Park, who is of Korean and Argentine descent, and is best known for refined Japanese fare (particularly sushi) at neighbouring restaurant Park. That said, he has dipped his toes into a range of pan-Asian and fusion cuisines at restaurants he’s involved with such as Jatoba and Kampai Garden.

For his first foray into Thai food, there’s a good number of classics — satay with peanut sauce, green papaya salad, red curry chicken, and pad thai all figure on the menu across both lunch and dinner. In the evenings, the menu is extended to feature larger options like lemongrass-marinated steak served with sweet-spicy jim jeaw sauce, and a fried sea bass dish. There are a few fusion options too — some are interesting, like a coconut crème brûlée, although there’s also honey chicken, an option that seems more Americanized-Chinese than Thai.

Kwai is also the first restaurant in the city to merge Thai cuisine and brunch — that menu brings options that go comfortably outside the Montreal brunch standards of Benedicts, avocado toast, or bacon-and-egg adjacent options — there’s two noodle stir fries, tom yum fried rice with fried egg, lemongrass steak and eggs, and for the sweet toothed, an almond flour pancake with poached pineapple.

STATUS — Kwai is open at 374 Victoria Avenue from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesdays to Saturdays, and 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays. Closed Mondays.

Including the closure of a 38-year-old Italian restaurant courtesy of never-ending construction

ST-HENRI — Sad news from Notre-Dame West as Mexican sandwich spot Torteria Lupita announced its closure over the past weekend. A note posted to Facebook cited personal reasons, and the restaurant put together its final meat, cheese, and avocado-laden tortas on November 23. Lupita opened in mid-2016 under owner Sandra Soto, who grew up in Mexico City and honed her culinary experience at Olive & Gourmando. She crafted her own charming sandwich shop into an affordable neighbourhood hub, so it’s a shame to see one of only a handful of places in town for a great torta to close down.

PLATEAU — The people behind popular bars Le Majestique and Darling have closed down their fancy ice cream and café project, Confetti, which opened only a year ago on Mont-Royal next to Clark Street.
The neighbourhood around the music venue has changed drastically over its 13 years in business.

Another Montreal music venue will bite the dust soon, as punk, metal-and-more venue Les Katacombes has announced plans to close at the end of 2019.

Located in a distinctive black building on the corner of St-Laurent and Ontario in the Latin Quarter, Katacombes has been hosting bands and other events for 13 years. The space was run as a DIY co-op, and while it tended to draw heavier acts in the punk and metal sphere, it hosted a wide range of arts and culture events since its founding in 2006.

The closure was announced on Facebook, with the co-op owners not giving a precise reason for the venue’s demise, although they did hypothesize that “it’s super expensive now downtown and also that the building is falling apart and the landlord won’t do any work on it cause he’ll probably demolish it soon”.

The announcement went on to call the closure “a really sad news for the international and local underground music industry.”

Katacombes’ building is owned by a numbered corporation that appears to be linked to a real estate company named Ghattas & Associés, based on Décarie Boulevard. The co-op did not specify if it was voluntarily leaving the building, or if it was being pushed out by landlords. As radio station CHOM noted in reporting the closure, the area around Katacombes has changed drastically in recent years, and there are major condo developments going up in the area.

Katacombes will have a series of final shows before it closes its doors on December 31.

The venue is the latest of several notable departures from Montreal’s music scene in recent years — in early 2018, Plateau salle de spectacles Le Divan Orange was forced to close after being slapped with thousands of dollars of fines stemming mostly from noise complaints from one couple who lived above the bar. Mile End coffee shop and music venue Le Cagibi was forced to move in 2018, and is unable to host shows in its current location. Back in 2015, longtime St-Laurent venue and bar Les Bobards also shuttered; its location is now trendy bar Le Darling.

Despite the closures, at least two new venues have cropped up, even if they’re rather small — singer-songwriter Martha Wainwright opened Ursa in Mile End earlier this year, and on the Plateau, the Diving Bell Social Club began hosting shows and other events on St-Laurent in late 2018.

Plus, three other restaurant closures to note

CÔTE-DES-NEIGES — No-fuss burger joint Uniburger is no longer open in Côte-des-Neiges; its location by the Jewish General Hospital quietly closed down in recent weeks after around five years in business. Owner Younes Bengeloune tells Eater that the lease for the space on Côte-des-Neiges Road ended, and he decided not to renew. Yet there’s no need to fear for the future of that popular patty purveyor — Bengeloune says there are “a few locations in the pipeline for 2020”. There are no details on where those might be yet, but they’re a-coming. Meanwhile, two locations for the business are still flipping patties — the original in the Latin Quarter, and another in St-Henri. There’s also Unibar in Old Montreal, which isn’t technically the same, but serves up some very similar, simple burgers.

PETITE-PATRIE — Spanish-leaning brunch and lunch nook Fixe has closed down on the St-Hubert Plaza. After eight years in the biz, its final service was in late September. A post on Facebook stated that the bistro’s family owners are moving on to “new adventures” and that the restaurant would be transformed into...something. (No precise details have been offered up on that front.)

MILE END — Fancy-pants wine bar M.Mme, headed by notable local chef Stelio Perombelon, has closed down. It actually closed several months ago, but in such a stealthy way that it went mostly unreported (even Google still lists it as open), and Eater readers continue to be surprised by its disappearance. No public announcement of the closure seems to have been made — the restaurant and bar opened on Laurier Avenue at the very end of 2015, drawing acclaim for its food and 700 bottle wine cellar, although it was notably very expensive.

PLATEAU — Prince-Arthur Street tartare restaurant Marché 27 is no longer — having claimed to be “the only tartare bar in the world” when it opened several years ago, it was also notable for sending at least seven customers to hospital with E. coli, although it stayed in business for over five years after that incident.

DOWNTOWN — Kind-of-Chinese restaurant Mon Chicha has departed its premises on de Maisonneuve, adjacent to Concordia University.

PLATEAU — Big ol’ grill-based restaurant La Grotte has shuttered its expansive premises on Mont-Royal at Bordeaux, confirmed by a sign plastered in its windows.
